What is a good sized gourd for drinking yerba mate?
I am shopping around for a yerba mate gourd. But I don’t know what size to get; how many ounces is a good size for one to a small group of people?
Pete answers:
We have been using a gourd that holds 5 to 6 ounces of liquid. With this size of a gourd 2 persons can drink comfortably. That means that we can drink 40 to 50 ounces of water or until the yerba gets washed in one sitting without having to add more yerba mate. This gourd is the size of a large man’s fist.
The larger the gourd the more yerba mate you can place inside. This will allow more persons to drink comfortably without having to empty the spent yerba and replace it with fresh yerba too often.
Another consideration is you want a gourd that fits in the palm of your hand and feels right, it is not too large.
Remember it is OK to have more than one gourd going around the room if you have 15 or 20 persons drinking yerba mate.
